If you picture The Raven, there's a good chance you're picturing Gustave Doré's version of it, even if you've never heard his name.
The illustrator of nightmares
Doré was one of the most celebrated illustrators of the 1800s. His engravings for Dante's Inferno, the Bible, Paradise Lost and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner defined how generations imagined hell, angels and the sea. Vast skies, tiny figures, light breaking through darkness. If any artist was made for Poe, it was him.
A Raven he never saw printed
In the early 1880s, Doré took on The Raven. He illustrated the poem's great moments: the scholar in his chamber, the ghostly visitations of Lenore, the bird on the bust of Pallas, and finally the narrator's soul trapped in the raven's shadow on the floor.
He died in January 1883, before the book came out. Harper & Brothers issued the New York edition with an 1884 title-page date. It turned out to be one of the last great projects of his life, and it's still the edition collectors chase. The Crypt of Echoes archive preserves the 1884 edition itself.
There's something fitting about it. A poem about a man who can't let go of the dead, illustrated by an artist who didn't live to see it printed.
What Doré understood
Doré didn't draw a scary bird. He drew loneliness. In his plates the room is enormous and the man is small, and the dark presses in from every corner. The raven barely needs to move. That's the poem exactly: the horror isn't the visitor, it's the empty room it leaves behind.
Every generation draws its own
Before Doré, Manet made lithographs for a French translation. After him came Victorian advertisers, Halloween decorations and a thousand tattoos. Every generation draws The Raven again, because every generation finds its own reasons to grieve.
