How to Host a Candlelit Poe Listening Party This Halloween

Before radio, before film, people scared each other by reading aloud. Poe himself gave public readings of The Raven, and the poem spread as much by voice as by print. (The Crypt of Echoes archive preserves a 1913 recording of The Raven by Percy Hemus, if you want to hear how far back this goes.)

This Halloween, bring it back. A listening party takes about ninety minutes, costs almost nothing, and will be the night your friends talk about in November.

The house rule

Phones go in a bowl by the door. That's the whole trick. Ghost stories only work when nobody is half-listening.

The room

Light: candles only, or one lamp with a red bulb. In The Masque of the Red Death, Prince Prospero's last chamber is black, lit through blood-red glass. Do that.

Seating: in a circle, facing each other, not the speaker. Fear is contagious; let people see it. One prop: a bust, a skull, a stuffed bird from the thrift store. Every Raven reading needs something perched above the door.

The drink

Amontillado is a real sherry: dry, nutty, amber. A bottle costs about the same as a decent wine, and pouring it right before The Cask of Amontillado gets a laugh every time. For a non-alcoholic option, spiced apple cider in dark glasses.

The setlist

This is the running order of our Echoes from the Crypt cassette, and it's built like a good night should be: dread, then murder, then madness, then grief.

  1. The Masque of the Red Death — the party that thought it could lock death out. Start here.
  2. The Cask of Amontillado — pour the sherry now.
  3. Flip the tape. Take a five-minute break. Refill.
  4. The Tell-Tale Heart — kill all but one candle.
  5. The Raven — if you have the 7", switch to vinyl for this one. The needle drop is the moment.
  6. Annabel Lee — the quiet comedown.
  7. A Dream Within a Dream — the last line, then silence. Don't turn the lights on right away.

Going longer?

For a second act after midnight, put on The Call of Cthulhu. Four sides of cosmic dread, and it may wreck whatever sleep your guests had planned.

What you need

A tape deck and a turntable, or just one of them. Our Turntable Ritual set covers the whole night for $55 when you add these three to your cart: the Echoes from the Crypt cassette ($15), The Raven 7" ($22), and our gothic slipmat ($18). That clears free U.S. shipping. Orders are processed in 3–5 business days, followed by an estimated 3–7 business days in domestic transit. Halloween arrival is not guaranteed. See our shipping policy before ordering for a specific date.

Need a primer for your guests? Send them our listener's guide to the six tales first.

Light the candle. Lock the door. Press play.
